Hiring a Sports Photographer in London: What Actually Happens?

By September 24, 2026 Uncategorized

Most people who message me have never booked a photographer before. They’ve got a fight coming up, a new coaching business, a sponsor asking for “proper photos” — and they’re not sure where to start.

So here’s the honest version of what working with a sports photographer in London looks like, from first message to final images.

It starts with a conversation, not a price list

Before I talk numbers, I want to know what the photos are for. A boxer building a following on Instagram needs something very different from a personal trainer updating their website, or a club that wants matchday coverage.

The answer shapes everything — location, lighting, how many outfits, how long we shoot for. It’s also why I don’t quote a flat rate per photo. Two shoots can look similar on paper and need completely different amounts of work.

London is the best backdrop there is — if you plan it

One of the reasons I love being a London sports photographer is the variety. In a single afternoon you can go from a raw, industrial gym to a running track to a concrete underpass that looks like a film set.

But London also has crowds, rain and permit rules. A bit of planning goes a long way:

  • Gyms are usually the easiest option — controlled light, no weather, and it’s where you actually train.
  • Outdoor spots look great but need a backup plan. I always have one.
  • Early mornings are gold. Empty streets, soft light, no one walking through your shot.

On the day

My job isn’t just pressing the shutter. I’ll guide your poses, tell you when your shoulders have crept up to your ears, and push you to move the way you do when you’re actually training — because that’s when the best shots happen.

Most people are stiff for the first ten minutes. That’s normal. By the end, they’ve usually forgotten the camera is there.

After the shoot

You’ll get a gallery of edited images, ready for social media, your website, press or sponsors.

Is it worth it?

If your body, your skill or your brand is how you earn a living, your photos are doing a lot of work for you. Good images get you taken seriously — by clients, sponsors, and anyone scrolling past.

If you’re looking for a sports photographer in London, have a look through my portfolio and send me a message. Tell me what you’re working towards, and we’ll figure out the rest together.
